Angela Buckley

Work Experience

Following her initial training in Counselling and Psychotherapy, Angela worked for two years with LIR Therapy Centre on the Ballymun Road, meeting clients with a broad range of counselling needs. Angela’s Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapeutic training required students to study and employ a variety of theoretical schools in their therapeutic practice; such as Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Object Relations Therapy, Gestalt, CBT and Rogerian Therapy. The benefit of having studied such a wide variety of methods means that Angela can draw upon a variety of approaches within the same therapy session. During her time on the MA in Psychotherapy, Angela developed a special interest in the field of neuroscience; exploring the links between psychotherapy, neuroscience, serious mental illness and the effects of trauma on the developing brain. Angela also works in the Community Sector. She coordinates a low – cost counselling service and delivers a range of supportive/creative groups with a therapeutic basis; targeted mainly for participants coming from a disadvantaged socio-economic background. Angela delivers individual anxiety management and stress reduction sessions as part of her community work. Due to her involvement within the community sector, Angela has a particular interest in the effects of intergenerational poverty and trauma on both the individual and family. Angela specialises in working with Trauma, PTSD, Bereavement, Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders and Maternal Mental Health.

Underlying philosophy

Angela predominantly works from a psychodynamic approach– believing that the past experiences of the client have shaped and influenced their present state of being. Under the psychodynamic approach, the client can heal themselves by exploring their past within the safety of the therapy session. This allows the client to develop and grow both personally and outwardly, in their relationships. Further to this, Angela holds the principle that the client is the centre of the therapeutic process; working from a client-centred perspective. Under this guiding philosophy, the therapeutic relationship between the client and therapist is the most essential part of the process. By discovering a new way of being, the client can find a sense of inner confidence and peace, allowing them to form a greater resilience towards life’s varied challenges.

Work Experience

Joanne has worked in both public and private psychotherapy practice as a student and graduate psychotherapist. She works in a humanistic integrative way, focusing on the client and their potential for growth and self-integration. Methods are adapted based on the client’s needs and what they bring to the room, as opposed to using one fixed method. Joanne has experience working with issues such as depression, anxiety, identity issues, trauma, addiction, family systems, abuse, and relationship problems.

Underpinning Philosophy

Although trained in a humanistic manner, Joanne pulls from the integrative elements of her training quite frequently by using methods from psychodynamic, gestalt and existential therapies.
