Mairead Kafe

Work Experience

Mairead is a psychotherapist and counsellor, and an accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) and the Association for Psychological Therapies (APT). Mairead has over 9 years of experience working with adults experiencing mental health difficulties in both community centres and private practice. As well as offering support in the areas of anxiety and relationship issues, she has worked with clients dealing with abuse, bereavement, depression, health issues, low self-esteem, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. Mairead works face to face with clients in Fairview Therapy Centre. She has worked with Northside Counselling Services since 2013, Save Our Sons And Daughters (Drogheda and Navan) centres since 2015.

Underlying philosophy

Mairead works from a holistic perspective, assisting the client to be heard (in a safe space), explore their challenges, leading to their personal growth. Mairead uses the following therapeutic approaches: Rogerian, Person-Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). Mairead works with adults (18 years+), individual therapy sessions or DBT group therapy sessions. DBT is an effective treatment for people who have difficulty controlling their emotions and behaviours. It aims to replace problem behaviours with skilful behaviours. Dialectical means: two opposite ideas can be true at the same time, and when considered together, can create a new truth and a new way of viewing the issues. There is always more than one way to think about a situation.

Academic Background

Mairead has a Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy with a range of additional certifications, in particular: Applied Suicide Intervention Skills, CBT skills for weight management, Issues of Sexual Violence and Mindfulness

Work Experience

Joanne has worked in both public and private psychotherapy practice as a student and graduate psychotherapist. She works in a humanistic integrative way, focusing on the client and their potential for growth and self-integration. Methods are adapted based on the client’s needs and what they bring to the room, as opposed to using one fixed method. Joanne has experience working with issues such as depression, anxiety, identity issues, trauma, addiction, family systems, abuse, and relationship problems.

Underpinning Philosophy

Although trained in a humanistic manner, Joanne pulls from the integrative elements of her training quite frequently by using methods from psychodynamic, gestalt and existential therapies.
