Valerie McParland

Work Experience

Valerie holds a BSc (Hons) in Counselling and Psychotherapy and is a pre- accredited counsellor and psychotherapist with the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP). She brings over two decades of experience in teaching and education, alongside her professional training in counselling and psychotherapy, to offer a holistic, person-centred, and compassionate approach to her work.

Underpinning Philosophy

Valerie believes that at the heart of counselling is the need to feel truly understood, accepted, and valued for who we are. Her counselling approach is rooted in a person-centred philosophy, based on empathy, unconditional positive regard, and collaboration. Valerie aims to create a safe, non-judgmental space where the client can explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences freely and at their own pace. Valerie also integrates Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques where they may be helpful. This can involve looking at how thoughts, feelings, and behaviours interact and exploring practical ways to recognise and challenge unhelpful patterns. Valerie hopes to support the client in developing greater self-awareness and resilience, while providing a space to explore what matters to them, gain a deeper understanding of themselves, and find their own way forward. Valerie provides one-to-one counselling for adults aged 18 and over and works with a range of presenting issues, including:

  • Anxiety, stress and burnout
  • Low mood and depression
  • OCD
  • Anger and emotional difficulties
  • Relationship and family difficulties
  • Life challenges and transitions
  • Bereavement, grief and loss
  • Trauma

Work Experience

Joanne has worked in both public and private psychotherapy practice as a student and graduate psychotherapist. She works in a humanistic integrative way, focusing on the client and their potential for growth and self-integration. Methods are adapted based on the client’s needs and what they bring to the room, as opposed to using one fixed method. Joanne has experience working with issues such as depression, anxiety, identity issues, trauma, addiction, family systems, abuse, and relationship problems.

Underpinning Philosophy

Although trained in a humanistic manner, Joanne pulls from the integrative elements of her training quite frequently by using methods from psychodynamic, gestalt and existential therapies.
