Mairead Kafe

Work Experience

Mairead is a psychotherapist and couples therapist, and an accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP). Mairead has over 12 years of experience working with adults experiencing mental health difficulties in a variety of settings. As well as offering support in the areas of anxiety and relationship issues, she has worked with clients dealing with abuse, bereavement, depression, health issues, low self-esteem, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. Mairead offers therapy through a variety of mediums including face to face, online via zoom and by phone. She offers her services in a community setting (SOSAD, SAFE), in private practice with Fairview Therapy Centre, as well as in a corporate capacity via EAP (Employee Assistance Programme) work. Mairead has expertise in dealing with people from neurodiverse backgrounds (Autistic, OCD, ADHD etc) and practices in a neuro-affirming manner; she has completed AUsome training in this regard. She also runs a support group for parents and families of neurodivergent children (COTHÚ), providing them with a safe space to process their own feelings and supplying them with tools and understanding to support their child, thus facilitating improved relationships therein. She works with individuals (18 years +) and couples.

Underlying philosophy

Mairead works from a holistic perspective, assisting the client to be heard (in a safe space), explore their challenges, leading to their personal growth. Mairead uses the following therapeutic approaches: Rogerian, Person-Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy(CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) and Gottman Method Couples Therapy (with couples). DBT is an effective treatment for people who have difficulty controlling their emotions and behaviours. It aims to replace problem behaviours with skilful behaviours. Dialectical means: two opposite ideas can be true at the same time, and when considered together, can create a new truth and a new way of viewing the issues. There is always more than one way to think about a situation.

Academic Background

Mairead holds a Diploma and a Degree (Hons) in Counselling and Psychotherapy. She also holds a certificate in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) AUsome training, and Gottman Method Couples Counselling levels 1 and 2. She is trained in the COTHÚ method and holds support groups for parents and families of neurodiverse children.

Work Experience

Joanne has worked in both public and private psychotherapy practice as a student and graduate psychotherapist. She works in a humanistic integrative way, focusing on the client and their potential for growth and self-integration. Methods are adapted based on the client’s needs and what they bring to the room, as opposed to using one fixed method. Joanne has experience working with issues such as depression, anxiety, identity issues, trauma, addiction, family systems, abuse, and relationship problems.

Underpinning Philosophy

Although trained in a humanistic manner, Joanne pulls from the integrative elements of her training quite frequently by using methods from psychodynamic, gestalt and existential therapies.
