Ciaran Mahony

Work Experience

Ciaran has extensive experience working as a counsellor and psychotherapist with individuals, on a wide range of issues, including bereavement, anxiety, depression, addictions, LGBTQ+ issues, sexuality, trauma, child sexual abuse, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, obsessions, life crises, existential issues and identity issues. He also works as a clinical supervisor and a tutor/group clinical supervisor on psychotherapy training courses.

Underlying philosophy

In his work, Ciaran is informed by a humanistic and integrative approach. He believes that all individuals seeking therapy have the ability to find their own way forward within the supportive and safe space that the therapeutic relationship can offer. He believes that though sharing and exploring their unique struggles and blocks with their therapist, that debilitating life issues can be understood in a deeper way, enabling the individual to lead a healthier and more fulfilling life. Ciaran draws from person centred, psychodynamic, gestalt, body-based approaches and art and creative processes, according to the individual needs of each unique client.

Academic Background

Ciaran graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resource Management) from UCD in 1995. This was followed by a Higher Diploma in Arts in Psychoanalytic Studies in 2000 from DBS. He then went on to train as a psychotherapist earning a Higher Diploma in Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy from the Institute of Creative Counselling and Psychotherapy in 2006. He has since undertaken a Diploma in Gestalt Therapy, a Diploma in Art therapy Skills, a Diploma in Clinical Supervision (Gestalt Relational Approach) and most recently a Masters in Child Family and Community Studies from TU Dublin. He is a fully accredited member of IAHIP and IACP.

Work Experience

Joanne has worked in both public and private psychotherapy practice as a student and graduate psychotherapist. She works in a humanistic integrative way, focusing on the client and their potential for growth and self-integration. Methods are adapted based on the client’s needs and what they bring to the room, as opposed to using one fixed method. Joanne has experience working with issues such as depression, anxiety, identity issues, trauma, addiction, family systems, abuse, and relationship problems.

Underpinning Philosophy

Although trained in a humanistic manner, Joanne pulls from the integrative elements of her training quite frequently by using methods from psychodynamic, gestalt and existential therapies.
