Barbara Doyle: B.Soc. Sc., D.S.W., C.Q.S.W., Grad. Dip. Integrative Clinical Psychotherapy and MSc. Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. MIAHIP

Academic Background: Barbara graduated from DCU with a Masters Degree in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy and a Graduate Diploma in Integrative Clinical Psychotherapy from Turning Point Institute (TPI). She previously studied at UCD and the University of Edinburgh, where she gained her undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications that led to a career in social work.

Work Experience: The experience of working as a social worker in a variety of settings over 27 years, reinforced her strong interest and passion for working with people who, for a variety of reasons are feeling ‘troubled’ in life and therefore in need of psychological support.

And so it was a natural progression to train as a psychotherapist where Barbara felt that she could work with clients on a more personal and deeper level on issues of concern to the client. Her experience has taught her that the areas of personal struggle that present in psychotherapy often include; relationship difficulties, anxiety, panic attacks, anger, depression, isolation, sexuality, self-harm, suicide, trauma, sexual abuse, grief and self-esteem issues.

Underpinning Philosophy: Being a humanistic psychotherapist, Barbara concurs with the belief that every individual has the freedom to make choices and the capacity to heal and grow towards their own true potential. As her professional approach is predominately person-centered, it follows that her work with clients is empathetic, non-judgemental, supportive and confidential.  There is a strong emphasis on helping the client to become more aware of her/his own thoughts and feelings and from this position (of self-compassion and acceptance) change is more likely to occur. However other therapeutic approaches i.e. psycho-dynamic, cognitive behaviour, gestalt, and psychosynthesis are also utilised, reflecting Barbara’s training in integrative psychotherapy.
